Chapter 03 · About

We build the bench so founders can stop being it.

Jeff Sanders, co-founder of The Agent Bench

I'm Jeff. I've worked in every single seat this industry has to offer, from launching a smoothie bar at a single-location boutique to serving on the board of the Health and Fitness Association.

I've worked every rung of the ladder: front desk, janitor, sales associate, GM, VP, COO, CEO, Chief Growth Officer, Owner and Partner. I went from sales associate to GM at LA Fitness in sixty days, and as employee number two at a regional chain, I scaled it as COO from one location to five. I've helped multi-site operators grow recurring revenue 30 to 40 percent year-over-year. Big box, boutique, corporate, independent: I've lived every role, seen every perspective, and run every model.

Here's the lesson that took me years and a lot of burnt capital to learn: the moment you make decisions based on what you prefer instead of what the consumer wants, you've lost. If you write ad copy based on whether you'd click it, or buy equipment because you like using it, you start off on the wrong foot. Champion teams run on disciplined, objective data, not personal bias.

People used to call me a "jack of all trades" like it was a flaw. It turned out to be my biggest advantage. I view every business like a chessboard. My brain naturally connects the dots across sales, marketing, and operations to spot patterns others miss, anticipating the secondary moves so today's quick fix doesn't become tomorrow's operational bottleneck.

What pisses me off about tech and AI right now is that operators are forced into generic, one-size-fits-all software. You get stuck with a tool that solves 70% of your problem while creating three new ones. Tech shouldn't force you to compromise, and it shouldn't be static. It needs to be custom-built for your workflow and evolve as you scale.

Growing up in sports, I was never the star recruit. I was the ultimate bench player: the guy you threw into any position, in any high-stakes situation, knowing I'd deliver when it mattered most. That's the exact instinct behind The Agent Bench.

I'm in my 40s, a husband, and a father. I know what it feels like to grind from sun-up to way past sun-down with a family waiting at home because manual work left you no choice. Entrepreneurs put every ounce of themselves into their business. Working alongside Mikaela, my goal is to build the operational leverage that lets you save a few ounces for your family and yourself.

My job is to step back, look across your entire board, and connect the dots, working with Mikaela to pinpoint the exact leverage your business is missing so you can get your time back.

I don't trust vanity metrics, guesses, or generic software. I trust data, strategic chess, and systems that protect both your margin and your home life.

The other half of the bench

Meet Mikaela.

Mikaela Hardwick, co-founder of The Agent Bench

I'm Mikaela. I'd rather show you the work than talk about myself, but here's the short version.

The bench isn't a metaphor I picked out of a branding exercise. I grew up playing high-level sport, started working in gyms at seventeen, and took two degrees on the way to becoming a sports dietitian in professional rugby, soccer and AFL. Then I co-owned and ran three boxing gyms in Australia, and that's where the expensive lesson happened: I watched profitability break down the moment the owner-operator stepped out of the picture. I was the owner-operator.

And I learned the thing nobody tells you at the start: no one will ever care about your business the way you do. The next best thing is a team that feels part of something bigger, with everything they need to do their jobs well. Building that comes down to operations, and that problem followed me out of the gyms.

Since then, the deep end has been the career plan. I moved into a global SaaS company and built my roles mostly by putting my hand up: Head of Operations, then Director of Customer Success, now Principal Strategic Ops. I've pulled a customer lifecycle apart from first lead to renewal and rebuilt it, and cut over $200,000 in subscription costs by consolidating tools that did the same job. Different industries, same discovery every time: the fundamentals of process carry across.

Everything else I do comes straight from sport: get one percent better every day, and never look at a process just once, because the game at $1M isn't the game at $5M or $10M. The Agent Bench is the instinct I've carried through every one of those rooms, finally given its own name.

This is built in public, and that's the point. I'm two steps ahead of you, not ten. I built my own thing while raising my standards, I stopped making excuses before I asked anyone else to, and I'll tell you about the thing I got wrong last week if it saves you a month.

My job is to stay across the tech so you don't have to, and to tell you the truth about what your business needs, including when the answer is "nothing new." You run the business. I'll watch the constant stream of new AI tools and updates, and bring you the rare one that actually matters.

I don't trust hype, shortcuts, or people who talk more than they do. I trust process, consistency, and the unglamorous work that compounds.

What we believe

Five principles, non-negotiable.

How we work

The build is async. The relationship isn't.

Live where it matters

Discovery, the audit, the mapping, and the check-ins that keep the work on track all happen live, with one of us across the table. Deciding whether we're the right fit deserves a real conversation. So does how you're doing three months in.

Documentation does the heavy lifting

Everything we build arrives documented for you: a video walkthrough, a written SOP, and a handover doc. You'll always understand what was built, and your team can run it without us.

The build runs async

Between those conversations, execution runs async. No meetings for the sake of meetings, no waiting on a calendar slot before a workflow can move. Progress shows up in your inbox, not as another invite.

When everything important lives in your head, you've built a business that holds you hostage. Let's fix that.
